Maintaining an up-to-date Google Business Profile (previously Google My Business) is critical for local businesses as well as multi-location brands that want to get found by customers online. After the business has created or claimed a Google Business Profile, the next step is to get the listing verified. This allows Google to confirm the business owner’s identity and prevents anyone else from falsely claiming ownership. We recommend getting verified as soon as possible to ensure accurate information appears in Google Search and Maps results.
However, some businesses have trouble completing the verification process, often due to an issue with the verification pin that Google sends by phone or postcard. Fortunately, this is a very common problem and can be easily remedied.
The Most Common Google Business Profile Verification Issues
1. Incorrect Listing Address
First, check that the listing address is accurate. Search for the business’ address on Google Maps, being careful to type in the address exactly as appears in the Google Business Profile. If the business doesn’t show up in the results or you see a list of other suggestions (under “Did you mean…?”), then something may be wrong with the listing. Double check the address in the Google Business Profile and make any necessary adjustments.
2. Expired Verification Pin
Another possibility is that the verification pin is no longer valid. Verification codes expire after 30 days and are unique to a specific business listing. If the pin is expired or if the business address has recently changed, you will need to request a new pin from Google.
How to Request a New Verification Pin
To get a new verification pin, the business owner or account administrator can simply login to Google Business Profile and select “Request another code” at the top of the screen. A new postcard should arrive within twelve days. However, if you don’t see the option to request a new pin, contact Google directly and they should be able to help.
